Alan Joyce hits back at unions saying it’s not up to them who is Qantas’ CEO
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has hit back at comments made by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) who has claimed outsourcing and cutbacks at the airline have raised safety concerns, including calling on Joyce to resign.
“We have worked through each of those groups, and we’ll be talking again on Thursday about how many of the groups have actually signed on,” Joyce said.
Earlier this week, the TWU claimed leaked emails proved Qantas used the cover of Covid to wipe out union agreements.
It says the deliberate tactic resulted in mass job losses, airport chaos and a significant reduction in pay, conditions and job security across aviation.
In regards to his position as CEO, Joyce left no room for misinterpretation.
“The TWU have been saying that for all the years I’ve been CEO, to be honest.
It’s not the TWU that determines if I’m the CEO, it’s the shareholders and the board.
“The airline is in a really good health and safety position. So, I think there are facts and then there are misleading comments,” Joyce said.
