American Airlines is making considerable steps towards its sustainability goals, and being recognised for it, recently winning the 2023 Air Transport World (ATW) award for the eco airline of the year.

The award, determined by a panel of editors and analysts from the industry, the awards recognise brilliance in a range of airline operations and are coveted awards in the air transport industry.

American Airlines (AA) won 2023’s award largely due to their progress towards ambitious goals the airline has set in relation to sustainability.

AA is committed to a 45 per cent reduction in carbon intensity by 2035, they are also an industry leader in the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – using two million gallons in 2022 and has existing plans to use 620 million gallons in years to come.

AA is also undertaking the largest fleet renewal in the history of the industry, striving for better levels of fuel efficiency which has already dropped 10 per cent since 2013. The decrease over the last decade has saved 1.9 billion gallons of fuel and prevented the curation of 19 million metric tonnes of CO2.

“We’re going green – and the world is taking notice!” CEO, American Airlines, Robert Isom, said via an Instagram post.

“Air Transport World has named @AmericanAir the 2023 Eco-Airline of the Year.

“The #AATeam is taking action to incorporate sustainability at every level of our business, from the fuel we buy to how we design our airports and offices.

“And our all-of-the-above approach is just getting started.

“As Eco-Airline of the Year, we will continue to lead the industry as an innovator in this space and keep building an American Airlines that will thrive forever.

“After all, a world worth traveling is a world worth protecting.”

“At a time when sustainability is a driving force in the aviation industry, American Airlines has a clear vision for the future of sustainable aviation and is making meaningful strides to reach their goals,” ATW, editor-in-chief, Karen Walker said in a statement.

“With a comprehensive carbon emissions reduction strategy that touches nearly every part of their company, awarding Eco-Airline of the Year to American is incredibly well-deserved in what was the most competitive field yet.”
