Google Street View unveils virtual tours of Sydney’s harbour

Google has today announced that some of Sydney’s iconic ferry routes like the Manly ferry are now available on street view for the world to see.

One of the worlds most famous harbours has been scoped by the Google street view team, allowing users to take a virtual tour of the docked ferries at Circular Quay and make the trip across the harbour to Manly wharf after Transport for NSW, Google and Sydney ferries operator Transdev partnered to capture 360-degree vision of iconic public transport systems.

“Virtual visitors can look inside and outside the ferry, docked at Circular Quay – and also take a trip on two of Sydney’s most celebrated ferry routes, Circular Quay to Manly and Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo. These experiences are available on Google Street View from today,” Howard Collins, Transport for NSW COO, said.

“These famous routes give viewers the full experience of travelling on an iconic Sydney ferry on the glistening Sydney Harbour on a sunny afternoon.

“I hope the magnificent footage we’ve captured and the virtual reality experience of Google Street View, encourages both locals and visitors to Sydney to take a trip on a Sydney ferry and enjoy this one-of-a-kind public transport experience.”

Google’s street view feature has been offering a virtual window to the world since 2007 and has previously given audiences a glimpse into whale sharks on Ningaloo reef and Kakadu National park to name a few, Sydney’s ferry system and harbour views are the newest addition.

“We are thrilled to build on our decade-long partnership with Transport for NSW and Transdev to celebrate and preserve this unique Australian experience on Street View,” Daniel Nadasi, engineering site lead, Google Australia, said.

“This imagery will allow people in Australia and all around the world to take a virtual tour of the iconic Sydney ferries, to help them plan their trip and get a glimpse of the journey on Sydney’s stunning harbour.”
