International cruise ships allowed in Japan

Hiroshima, Japan - May 26, 2015: Hiroshima Bay, Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Marine vessels travel near the islands of Hiroshima Bay on a spring morning. A cruise ship, tugboat and other craft pass the forest by the shore.

In another good news story for Japan tourism, the ban on international cruise ships has been lifted according to a release from the Transport Ministry.

With new anti-virus guidelines put in place port authorities and cruise ship associations, Japan will resume receiving foreign cruise ships into its ports.

Transport and Tourism Minister, Tetsui Saito, said:

“Japan is now ready to start receiving international cruise ships again.”

This is welcome news to international cruise ship operators who brought more than 2.15 million passengers to Japan in 2019 but closed their borders to all cruising tourists for the past two and a half years.

Once Australian cruise ship passengers are on land, they will be spoilt for choice, with destinations such as Ishikawa and Niigata, Japan’s newest “must-see” prefectures, renowned for their majestic ski resorts, authentic Japanese culture, and unique and delicious food and sake. Even better, these “must-see” prefectures are only a few hours from Tokyo by train or plane.

Cruise ship operators have not released the exact schedules yet as they ensure the crew members and passengers who arrive in Japanese ports comply with the vaccination requirements Japan currently has for visitors. They must also ensure strict guidelines for distancing, disinfecting common areas and ventilation are adhered to during the cruise and prior to arriving in Japan.
