“sacrilège!”: Travelling influencer enrages the French with croissant faux pas

If there’s one thing influencers are consistently good at, it’s causing a kerfuffle on the internet.

And if there’s one thing the French are good at, it’s food… and snobbery.

Which made German influencer Carolin Lauffenburger’s post about the correct way to eat a croissant the perfect recipe for disaster.

During a recent trip to Paris, Lauffenburger did what all good Instagram savvy folk do when visiting the French capital; she posted a video of herself enjoying a croissant on a cafe terrace.

But French newspaper Le Progres reported there was something strange about Lauffenburger’s video.

And it wasn’t the Louis Vuitton purse and frothy cappuccino elegantly placed on the white marble tabletop in front of the Berlin-based influencer, which we assume took long enough to arrange that her beverage almost certainly went cold in the process.

In the video, Lauffenburger dips the tip of her croissant into the froth on her coffee with what is being considered a truly outlandish caption: “How to eat your croissant like a Parisian”.

Can’t understand why her actions caused so much friction? Maybe you’ve never been berated by a French person for committing such a criminal faux pas. Lucky you!

According to Le Progres, Parisians were quick to make their outrage known online.

One commenter called Lauffenburger’s actions “seriously unacceptable”, another said the video was “sacrilège!”.

Apparently, Parisian etiquette dictates that you have to tear a small piece of the pastry off before taking a bite.

“Of course you can do it like that, but it’s not the Parisian way. French people don’t do it like that,” said one of the more level headed commenters.

Our favourite comment, however, is much more dramatic.

“She made my eyes bleed!” it reads.

“And the worst part is now 34,000 people think she’s doing it right!”
