World’s longest pedestrian bridge now open

World’s longest pedestrian bridge now open

If you’re scared of heights or will be crossing a bridge anytime soon, then get up from your computer and run from this article here.

Yep, it’s the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, and she’s very long indeed. And high. Good lord, she’s high!

According to numerous reports, including formidable Lonely Planet, the new bridge stretching out across the grey rocks of the Grabengufer ravine in southern Switzerland is where you’ll find this new attraction.

The suspension bridge was unveiled last weekend, with eager tourists and hikers alike taking a stroll across the newly-inaugurated 949m-long crossing between Grächen and Zermatt on Saturday.

Dangling as high as 85m in the air, the Europabrücke (Europe Bridge) replaces the old crossing which had been closed in 2010 following a number of rocky terrain and unstable rocks serving it up some serious damage.

And if there’s one thing you don’t want your very high, very long suspension bridge to have, it’s damage.

The new bridge is located around 200m down from the original, but it will save walkers the 1km roundtrip that headed down into the valley and back up along the trail above Randa.

It’s also been built in such a way that it isn’t expected to sway – thank god – all the way up there.

Check out a few extra Insta shots of it here:

‘Longest’ hanging pedestrian bridge opens in Switzerland #FACTS JULY 29, 2017. The 494m bridge, named the Europabrücke (Europe Bridge), hangs up to 85m above the Grabengufer ravine. The Zermatt Tourist Board says it is the world’s longest, although a 405m bridge in Reutte in Austria hangs 110m higher above the ground. It replaces a previous bridge that had been damaged by rock falls. The new bridge, whose cables weigh about eight tonnes, is equipped with a system to prevent it from swinging, the Zermatt Tourist Board said. It forms part of a two-day hiking route between Zermatt and Grächen in southern Switzerland with views of the Matterhorn mountain. #ninfonetwork #switzerland #BRIDGE #EUROPABRUCKE #GRABENGUFER #GRABENGUFERRIVER #ZERMATT #REUTTE #AUSTRIA #REUTTEAUSTRIA #matterhornmountain #GRACHEN #grachenswitzerland #NEWS #DAILYNEWS #FRANCE #GERMANY #ITALY #SPAIN #LONDON #ENGLAN #losangeles #NY #NYC #TOURIST #TOURISM #SWISS #usweekly
