NZ passports ‘trusted internationally’

Kiwis are able to go back to having 10-year passports because they’re produced with state-of-the-art technology, Prime Minister John Key says.

The government announced on Monday 10-year passports would replace five-year passports on December 31 this year, after legislation had been passed by parliament.

New Zealand changed to five-year passports in 2005 when other countries were doing the same to enhance the security of travel documents.

“Since then we’ve continued to improve security and today passports are produced using state-of-the-art technology,” Mr Key said.

“Because of this, the government is confident the integrity of our passports is vastly improved… our passports remain highly trusted internationally.”

The 10-year passport will cost $NZ180 ($A168.40), which is cheaper than a five-year passport and a renewal.

“There’s a high level of fixed costs in producing them, and in the improved technology,” Mr Key said.

“The government makes no money from passports.”
