SAA relief at interim extension

South African Airways has welcomed the International Air Services Commission’s (IASC) decision to extend its codeshare with Qantas until March 31, 2013, saying it will reassure its travel industry partners.

The IASC decision will see the codeshare between the two airlines extended until March 31, 2013 as the commission considers Qantas’s new application to extend the codeshare until March 31, 2016.

SAA country manager Australasia Tim Clyde-Smith said the move would enable the airline to book and fly passengers over the Christmas holiday period, traditionally its busiest time.

“We look forward to working with the travel industry who have faced uncertainty as the previous December 31 cut-off date got closer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Qantas said the decision provided “commercial certainty” through to March 2013.
