French officials say tourism is still safe despite ongoing unrest

Despite ongoing riots around the country, France’s economy minister has branded the nation safe for travel and believes it will have no impact on the French tourism season.

Smarttravller updated its warning to Australians heading to France last week, stating, “Since 27 June, riots have occurred across France which have turned violent, leading to the destruction of property including vehicles, shops, police stations and schools,”

“Be particularly vigilant at night and avoid all demonstrations and areas with significant police activity.”

However, Minister Bruno Le Maire told the U.K’s Daily Telegraph, “All the major democracies today are faced with this kind of problem.”

“Our British friends should be happy to visit France and have no fear.”

Le Maire is also trying to reassure foreign investors and rating agencies that helping businesses impacted by riots won’t mean more public debt.

According to MEDEF, a major French business lobby, damages could already total more than one billion euro.

The riots broke out after a 17-year-old boy of Algerian descent was shot dead by French police for allegedly not having a driver’s license in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre.

Demonstrations have since spread through Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Lille and as far as Belgium.
