Airlines across the US have cancelled more than 1,300 flights after tropical storm Nicole made landfall in Florida, forcing airports in the region to close.

American Airlines, Delta, Spirit and Southwest cancelled around 150 flights each and United cancelled a further 85 according to Reuters, while around 2000 flights were delayed on Thursday and 990 were cancelled on Wednesday.

Orlando International Airport closed on Thursday local time, resuming limited operations at 8pm last night local time, with domestic arrivals only.

“This decision was made after a thorough investigation of any property damage and a careful consideration for the safety and security of the travelling public and airport employees,” the airport said in a post to its Twitter page.

“Travellers are advised to contact their airlines and rental car companies directly for individual flight and rental car information.”

Daytona Beach International Airport closed on Wednesday and is set to reopen at 4am on Friday, local time.

The storm also led to closures at Florida theme parks on Wednesday, including Walt Disney World parks in Orlando and Universal Orlando Resort, according to CNN.
