Flights are on us! Tour operators to fund 10,000 return flights to Cairns
In an Australian first, the Cairns Aquarium and a collective of tourism providers have announced plans to fund 10,000 return economy airline tickets worth over $3 million as part of its
plans to showcase the best of Tropical North Queensland to Australian holiday makers.
The “Explore Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef” initiative has been unveiled in Cairns today after months of planning. The flights have been made possible through a collaboration of the city’s key tourism operators, attractions and hotels which includes: Cairns Aquarium, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Kuranda Scenic Rail, Down Under Cruise & Dive, Billy Tea Safaris, Dundees Restaurant, Novotel Oasis Resort and Virgin Australia.
The “Flights are on us” offering is part of a major tourism drive to grow Tropical North Queensland as one of Australia’s most visited and loved holiday destinations.
Airline tickets funded by the tourism operators will be spread out among three departure cities, Melbourne to Cairns, Sydney to Cairns and Brisbane to Cairns.
There are also specific travel dates:
- Travel period 1 09 MAY 2023 -22 JUN 2023
- Travel period 2 11 OCT 2023 -14 DEC 2023
- Travel period 3 16 JAN 2024 -15 FEB 2024

Travellers keen to travel to Cairns need to visit www.cairnsaquarium.com.au to fill out the online booking form.
Travellers who purchase the “Explore Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef” 5-Day, 4-night, all-inclusive travel package for 2 Adults will receive return Virgin Australia flights in economy from Melbourne to Cairns, Sydney to Cairns or Brisbane to Cairns.
The “Explore Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef” campaign has been designed to provide holiday makers with an incredible jam-packed adventure to experience the best of the reef, rainforest, outback, major nature attractions, guided tours and even a unique aquatic dining experience.
The package includes 4 nights stay at the 4.5-star Novotel Oasis resort with breakfast buffet included daily.

Visitor numbers to Cairns have surged since January 2022 to near record levels. In 2022, over 2.5 million visitors passed through the Cairns Airport, many experiencing Cairns for the very first time.
