There’s no medal for naming the story that’s got everyone talking today, the announcement from Victorian Premier, Dan Andrews that the 2026 Commonwealth Games have been cancelled.

The announcement, which was described by Victoria’s Opposition Leader John Pesutto as a “massive humiliation,” means massive changes to many industries, including travel and tourism.

As the story develops, Travel Weekly Australia will have the latest reaction and comment from stakeholders and parties affected by the announcement.

The announcement was made at 9.30am local time on Tuesday morning.

Shortly after the announcement, the Victoria Tourism Industry Council released a statement saying the industry would need support following the event’s canncellation.

While South Australia has ruled the state out of taking over the hosting of the games, Perth mayor Basil Zempilas said Western Australia should “swoop in” and secure a deal to host the event.
