Chilean airline LAN has announced it will offer four weekly non-stop flights between Santiago and La Paz, starting on July 4.

LAN, the region’s largest carrier, currently flies from Santiago to La Paz with a stop in the northern Chilean city of Iquique.

Elimination of the stop in Iquique will reduce the flight time from roughly five hours to around three, the airline said.

“In recent years, we have seen a substantial increase in demand for travel between Santiago and La Paz,” Latam’s general manager in Chile, Gonzalo Undurraga, said.

In 2015, LAN carried 50,000 travelers to La Paz via Iquique and the company expects a 40 per cent increase in the number of passengers with the new direct flight.

LAN will maintain three weekly flights to Bolivia – two to Santa Cruz and one to La Paz – that include a stop in Iquique.
