Aussies keen on Canada now need eTA

Aussie citizens heading to Canada will soon need to grab themselves an electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before they go.

The new requirement, which will be mandatory as of March 15 2016, requires Aussie travellers, who do not need a visa to enter Canada, to apply online, providing basic personal info similar to what is currently collected when they arrive in Canada.

Despite not being mandatory until March 2016, travellers can apply online for their eTA from August 1 2015.

The initiative, introduced by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, promises to be simple and convenient, with most applicants having their paperless eTA approved in minutes.

In addition, the new eTA system means travellers to Canada can expect a faster service upon arrival at the border.

The eTA was designed to protect the integrity of Canada’s immigration system, and will cost $7 Canadian per individual, and will last for as long as five years from the date of issue.
