$A5bn LaGuardia airport plan unveiled

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and US Vice President Joe Biden have unveiled a $US4 billion ($A5.50 billion) plan to renovate LaGuardia Airport which will double its size and unify ageing terminals.

The plan aims to transform the airport in the borough of Queens, which mainly serves domestic flights and which was characterised by Biden last year as like a “third world country.”

The vice president and Cuomo said the project would provide 8,000 jobs – along with another 10,000 indirect jobs – for 18 months.

The renovation will affect the terminals, runways and also access to the airport, connecting it with the train network – which in itself will cost $US450 million – and with a ferry.

In addition, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport will also undergo renovation, the details of which have not yet been revealed but which, Cuomo said, will employ 3,700 people.
