A city guide for the hungry traveller
Love cheese? Love chocolate? Food in general? Then have we got some ideas for you…
Sightseeing doesn’t have to be a boring traipse around a load of old buildings and museums – far from it.
And in a town as famous for its food as Zurich, it only stands to reason that generous doses of fondue, chocolate and rostis should play a part, and a significant one, in any exploration of its nooks and crannies.
Even if your appetite yearns more for a cheeky tipple than a more substantial snack, you’ll be well catered for. The city also has cocktail classes, beer brewing workshops and coffee crawls designed exactly with you in mind.
You can even feed your food obsession on your way to Zurich with Qatar Airways offering delicious gourmet cuisine as well as competitive fares from $1,450 in economy and $6,150 in business*.
Here’s our round-up of the five best Zurich tours for foodies:
Best for chocolate lovers
Indulge in some of the city’s most delicious chocolate treats from a range of artisan chocolatiers, more traditional confectioners and other interesting chocolate-themed locations. Don’t worry about the calories – you’ll be walking them off as you make your way around the old town on foot.
Finally, you’ll finish up the tour with a connoisseur tasting session where you will learn the art of tasting and pairing chocolate.

Best for cheese lovers
Take a journey back through time at the Milchmanufaktur dairy in Einsiedeln where you can make your own Bergsmutchli cheese (think small, semi-hard and full-fat) using the techniques employed in years gone by.
Although be warned, you won’t be able to take home the fruit of your labours until it has been left to mature for around a month. Nonetheless, a guide tour of the dairy highlights the differences between traditional and modern cheese-making techniques, offering a fascinating insight into the world of cheese.

Best for fondue fiends
If cheese is your weakness, but particularly when served warm and gooey, then this is the tour for you. Jump on board the Fonduetuk – the world’s first” for a Zurich city tour enjoyed with fondue fork in hand.
This mobile fondue feast has space for up to four people with a bottle of white wine included on every journey.

Best for bread bakers
There’s nothing quite like a loaf of freshly baked bread – just the smell can evoke a myriad of memories and feelings. So if that gets you weak at the knees, then why not try and bake your own loaf in the cozy bakery at the century-old mill in the Tiefenbrunnen quarter.
Shape already prepared dough into a number of different shapes, from elegant braids to cute animals, then pop them in the oven to bake while a miller leads you on a tour of the mill.

Best for all-round foodies
The hip area of Zurich West is the location of this gourmet discovery which will give you an insight into the city’s “gastronomic revolution” and how the locals live and eat.
Explore the district on foot, visiting the restaurants and bars that pepper its streets for tempting tastes of the city – all the while learning how this once industrial area became a pulsating hub.
