Wendy Wu diversifies to keep expanding

China specialist Wendy Wu Tours has reported another year of strong demand for its Indochina product with the region now making up almost 40% of total sales.

General manager Alan Alcock told industry partners last night that group tours to Indochina had climbed 34% in 2012 following a strong 2011.

Passenger numbers across its product range increased more than 15% with revenue up around 13%-14%.

Alcock also singled out its luxury Wendy’s Collection program as one of the year’s success stories with sales of the product exceeding expectations.

Branching out into new areas would enable the company to keep expanding, he said.

“We have looked closely at options available for continued growth and decided that diversification is the answer,” he said as he launched the operator’s 2013 product range. ”Wendy’s Collection is one of the ways that will allow this expansion.”

New for next year are five star group tours in China which will sit between its four star product and the upmarket Wendy’s Collection.

“Our clients enjoy the four star product but there was also demand from those prepared to upgrade and spend more,” he said.

Shangri-La hotels feature in the tours which are a slightly slower pace and offer more flexible dining options.

Taiwan has also been added to its China program while the successful re-introduction of Burma this year has prompted rapid expansion in the destination.

Alcock said a new itinerary has been added in Burma with the number of departures rising to 30. Wendy Wu Tours initially introduced two Burma departures in 2012 and later added six more, all of which rapidly sold out, Alcock said.
