Turkey gains ground as Greek debt fallout lingers
By admin

More Australians are heading to Turkey as the ongoing debt crisis continues to dampen tourism in Greece, Insight Vacations has revealed.

Following violent protests as Greece's debt woes deepen, Insight Vacations managing director Lorraine Sharp revealed that the country's tourism industry had been “impacted” in recent months.

Booking numbers are down on last year as travellers shy from the region, she confirmed.

But the Eastern Mediterranean is still performing, with destinations such as Turkey, Israel and Jordan experiencing a spike in bookings as Australian tourists look for other alternatives, Sharp said.

“The pent up demand for Greece has had an overspill effect into neighbouring regions… with Turkey the standout destination,” she told Travel Today.

“Israel and Jordan are also selling very well, continuing the growth we have seen in both of these over the past few years.”

When asked whether Greece’s tourism industry would make a comeback in 2012, Ms Sharp remained positive.

“Enquiry levels are still high and I predict that the number will return as global confidence in the region improves,” she concluded.
