Qantas was the most punctual domestic airline last year with almost 86% of flights taking off on time, official year-end government figures have shown.

But Jetstar took the wooden spoon with 76% of services departing on schedule.

QantasLink was marginally more punctual with 76.7% of flights taking off on time.

Qantas beat Regional Express (85.1%) into second place followed by Virgin Australia (83.3%), Tiger (82.8%) and Skywest (78%).

QantasLink cancelled the most flights, with 2.4% of flights failing to get off the ground. Qantas and Jetstar cancelled 1.3%, Tiger 1%, Rex 0.7% and Virgin Australia 1.5%.
