PNG: committed to cruising
By admin

Papua New Guinea’s prime minister, Peter O’Neill, has promised to accelerate investment in cruise infrastructure to help develop tourism to the region.

The move is in line with the country’s Cruise Ship Development Strategy in association with the PNG Ports Corporation, outlined in its Tourism Master Plan 2007-2017.

“We are taking steps to ensure cruising becomes an important contributor to our nation,” O’Neill said. “Infrastructure improvements are part of that strategy.”

P&O Cruises recently added two dedicated PNG itineraries aboard Pacific Dawn to its 2013/14 program.

O’Neill described the cruise line’s entry to the market as a “major boost” for PNG tourism.

Meanwhile, Carnival Australia chief executive Ann Sherry highlighted the region’s potential for the cruise industry.

“The PNG government’s decision to accelerate funding for the port upgrade at Alotau is a positive investment to achieve the economic benefits of regular cruise ship visits,” she said.

“Our aim is for the initial October to April 2013-14 cruise itineraries to PNG to be the first of many as this relationship continues to grow.”
