Intrepid Travel co-founder Geoff Manchester will stand down from his role as managing director of the adventure travel firm with commercial director, James Thornton, to take the reins.

Manchester, who co-founded the firm 23 years ago alongside Darrell Wade, has held the role for the last two years. During that time, Intrepid transitioned to the PEAK Adventure Travel Group, of which Wade is chief executive and Manchester is a director.

The company said Manchester is handing over the role in order to concentrate on areas of the business that he is “most passionate about”, such as responsible travel. But it insisted he will continue to play an “integral role”with responsibilities to include the Intrepid Foundation, acting as an “ambassador” at events and taking on “other activities within his remit as a PEAK director”.

“Geoff has played a huge role in growing and leading Intrepid over the last 23 years, both as co-founder and as managing director,” Wade said. “His leadership, strong values, focus on sustainable business and operation management have been pivotal in positioning it as the business that it is today, the world’s leading small group adventure brand.”

Thornton, who has been with Intrepid for seven years, has been credited with leading “the development of a sales culture at Intrepid” with the firm recording its best sales growth in six years for 2013. “We’re confident that he will lead the Intrepid Group to new heights,” Wade said. “He will be working closely with Geoff over the coming months to ensure there is a smooth transition of responsibilities and that the business continues to grow sales.”
