Chimu Adventures has expressed its surprise at the collapse of Kumuka, reporting signs of solid growth in the adventure travel sector.

Co-director Greg Carter said the strong Australian dollar combined with the growing popularity of its specialist destinations Latin America and Antarctica had seen its sales rise by more than 50% over the last financial year.

"We were saddened this week to hear the news of the recent collapse of Kumuka Worldwide," he said. "We were, however, somewhat surprised to see the news, as we continue to see solid growth in our sector."

Carter paid tribute to Kumuka's role in raising awareness of the benefits of adventure travel and said its legacy would "live on" in the Australian market.

Meanwhile, co-director Chad Carey reported a growing trend towards "boutique" travel.

"Personalising the itinerary and joining shared excursions to visit destination highlights is very popular as it gives the clients personal space as well as the opportunity to meet fellow travellers along the way," he said.

Carey said Chimu's opening of a Latin American operation helped its delivery of this type of touring model while keeping costs low and ensuring quality service.

The adventure travel firm today released its new 114-page brochure.
