Aussie beaches top new survey

Australians have given the thumbs up to domestic beach holidays with six out of ten Aussies voting local beaches better than those overseas in a new survey.

Tourism Australia's Domestic Consumer Demand Survey of 1,200 high yield Australian travellers put six Australian beach spots to the test alongside overseas competitors Bali, Fiji and Thailand to assess their relative appeal.

Tropical North Queensland and Broome/Exmouth/Ningaloo ranked as the top two beach destinations, with Gold Coast and the Whitsundays also ranking higher than any of the overseas locations.

Managing director Andrew McEvoy said the research proves Australian domestic holidays remain popular, dispelling notions they have fallen out of favour.

"This research demonstrates the enduring appeal amongst Australian families for the Australian seaside break, and confirms that we have some of the most desirable beach destinations in the world," he said.

Young travellers without children generally preferred overseas destinations, but for families, the Whitsundays came out on top. Older travellers without children voted for Broome/Exmouth/Ningaloo as their preferred destination.

While value for money was cited as a key consideration, the perception of cost differed only slightly with 38% saying Australia was more expensive, while 32% thought the overseas destinations were more pricey.

The research will be used to help TA develop better marketing strategies to persuade more Australians to holiday at home, McEvoy said.
