Air Niugini plans expansion
By admin

Off the back of a profitable four years, Air Niugini is focusing resources and time on the rapid expansion of the fleet in a 10 year company plan.

Air Niugini chief executive officer, Simon Foo spoke at the recent Lukim PNG Expo welcome reception in Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby, about the airline’s growth and plans for the future.

While growing at a fast pace, the airline has improved on time performance from 40% to 85%, while increasing codeshare services to include Air France and KLM. Air Niugini is looking to further expand into the Middle East with a codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways.

Foo said the expanded services into Australia have increased to twice daily to Brisbane (with the exception of Saturdays) and investment into launching a Cairns to Rabul direct flight.

“We are in talks for flights into Indonesia and looking to expand into China,” Foo added.

Further penetration into the Pacific markets of Vanuatu and Fiji is planned with new F70 jet aircraft.

The national airline is moving towards partial privatisation, with 49% to go on sale in the first of a series of privatisations. Papua New Guineans are being offered the chance to own shares in state owned assets up for sale.

Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea, based in Port Moresby. It operates a domestic network from Port Moresby and Lae, as well as international services in Asia, Oceania, and Australia. Its main base is Jacksons International Airport, Port Moresby. Niugini is the Tok Pisin word for New Guinea.
