Air New Zealand has begun daily services to Shanghai for the first time since launching the route in 2006 and also resumed a daily schedule to Tokyo.

The carrier described Shanghai, with a population of 23 million, as the "perfect gateway" for the rapidly expanding China market.

"China is now New Zealand's second largest inbound tourist market, after Australia, having recently overtaken both North America and the UK," deputy chief executive and acting sales officer Norm Thompson said.

The return of daily Tokyo services after years of reduced capacity demonstrated its commitment to Japan but also underlined the market's recovery, he said.

"The Japanese market is now showing signs of strong recovery after it was hit very hard by both the Christchurch earthquake and Japan tsunami," Thompson said. "We have continued to increase capacity on the Tokyo route in line with increased demand."
