World’s best and worst airlines and airports revealed

If you’re looking to get away and can’t stand delays, perhaps you should look to Hawaii if you’re hoping to get there on time.

Hawiiaan Airlines has just been crowned most punctual airline in the world by OAG, and air travel intelligence company.

The OAG annual Punctuality League, covering 200 airlines from every corner of the globe, revealed that 89.9 percent of Hawaiian’s flights arrived on time in 2016.

Meanwhile, closer to home, Qantas took out the gong for most punctual airline in the Asia-Pacific region, jumping from fourth place in 2015 and Sydney was also recognised as one of the top 20 most punctual major airports in the world.

The national carrier operated around 268,000 flights in 2016 only marginally beat Japan Airlines to the top spot, with 87.6% of its flights arriving on time. Globally, Qantas was ranked fourth.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for carriers of the size and complexity of Qantas to come out on top of the regional ranking. For any airline of its stature, there is a staggering array of service providers that support the transactional and functional performance. Qantas has clearly delivered an immensely stable operation in 2016, enabling consistent on-time performance and, in turn, satisfying passengers,” Mark Clarkson, OAG, said.

Australian airports are well represented across all the categories: Cairns joins the global top 10 in the Small Airports Category (2.5m-5m departing seats) also making it Australia’s most punctual airport.

Sydney continues to belong to the Top 20 most punctual airports in the world (Major Category – >20m departing seats) whilst Melbourne misses out this year by 0.1%. Perth and Adelaide achieved Top 10 status in their category (Medium) whilst Brisbane also made the Top 10 in the Large Category.
