Win a seat on a Japan famil trip

An endless trail of vermillion gates defines the Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder so as to block the sunlight, these torii gates become a mystical glowing tunnel of red and orange leading to the top of Kyoto’s Mount Inari.

Located behind the main buildings of the Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine, more than 10,000 of these torii gates cover the four kilometre path through wooded forest. Dating back to 711 A.D, the gates are boldly inscribed in black with the names of their donors, thankful for their good luck and prosperity in business.

While most travel to the Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine to view the trail of torii gates, the main buildings are no less spectacular. Set in front of the serene Mount Inari, the Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Thought to be Inari’s messengers, statues of foxes are scattered throughout the shrine grounds.

Walking though the network of torii gates is a pleasant day hike, and the two-hour trip around Mount Inari rewards you with breathtaking views of Kyoto from the top. Along the way, visitors can even try Kitsune Udon (Fox Udon), a noodle soup topped with fried tofu said to be the favorite food of foxes.
