Virgin Australia was among a handful of major Aussie organisations that were hit by technical difficulties yesterday afternoon.
At 3:40pm on Thursday, the airline tweeted to let customers know it was experiencing a system outage impacting its website and guest contact centre.
Virgin was one of many organisations hit by an outage with its content delivery system, Akami.
The issue also impacted three of Australia’s biggest banks – ANZ, Westpac and the Commonwealth Bank – as well as Australia Post.

Customers were unable to access Virgin Australia’s website until around 5pm when systems began to come back online.

The airline said in a statement that its flights were “largely operating as scheduled” and apologised to guests who were inconvenienced.
According to ABC News, the outage also caused difficulties for customers at the affected banks, with many reporting they could not access online banking leaving them unable to pay for goods and services.
The national broadcaster reported that the outage was caused by a routing table error and not a cyber attack as initially feared.
