Virgin Australia boss booed at Australian Open over comments about COVID-19 vaccines and Victorian govt

Virgin Australia boss Jayne Hrdlicka has copped a fair share of booing from the crowd at the Australian Open following the men’s final last night in Melbourne.

Hrdlicka, who is also the president of Tennis Australia, gave a post-match speech following Novak Djokovic’s straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev, where she spoke about COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out globally.

“With vaccinations on the way, rolling out in many countries around the world, it’s now a time for optimism and hope for the future,” she said.

Hrdlicka also thanked those who had made the major tennis tournament possible.

“The top of that list is the Victorian government. Without you, we could not have done this,” she said.

The comments by the Virgin and Tennis Australia supremo prompted a chorus of boos from the audience, causing Hrdlicka to constantly pause during her speech and wait for the noise to die down.

Hrdlicka finished off by thanking fans and labelling the crowd a “very opinionated group of people”.
