US government takes aim at “ever-shrinking” airline seats

Finally, an airline regulation we can get behind!

US airline regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) may have to set new minimum requirements for aeroplane seats, which could prevent airlines from shrinking legroom and seat space!

Associated Press reports the new requirements are part of a funding plan of federal aviation programs being considered by Congress.

One lawmaker, Democratic Senator Bill Nelson said it was time to take action on “ever-shrinking seats”

“Relief could soon be on the way for weary airline passengers facing smaller and smaller seats,” Nelson said, according to AP.

Earlier this year the FAA declined to set minimum standards for seats and legroom, saying it was not a safety issue, but Congress is now putting pressure on them to get it done.

The new requirements would also put a stop to involuntary ‘bumping’ of passengers who have already boarded a plane, and ban airlines from stowing pets in the overhead compartment.

Probably to prevent repeats of this horrifying incident from last yearwhen a doctor was violently dragged from a United Airlines flight and this heartbreaking incident which resulted in the death of a very cute french bulldog.

Plus, under the bill airlines would be required to give refunds to passengers for services they didn’t receive, for example, if their in-flight entertainment didn’t work.

So here’s to hoping this sets a precedent for airlines worldwide because we would very much like to avoid this situation.
