A strange smell has caused a Sydney-bound plane to be diverted to Brisbane.

The unusual odour was detected in the front galley of the aircraft after it took off from Hamilton Island on Tuesday.

The captain decided to land at Brisbane Airport as a “precautionary measure”, Virgin Australia said in a statement.

All passengers and crew safely disembarked and engineers are investigating the potential cause of the odour.
