Tourists selfies are costing tulip farmers in Holland thousands

The Dutch tourism board is pleading with tourists to stop trampling tulips in search of the perfect selfie.

According to the board’s website, flower growers are suffering hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage due to people wading through their flower fields. To combat the damage, it has posted a guide on its website instructing tourists on the ‘dos and don’ts’ of taking a tulip-friendly selfie.

“Do not walk into the flower fields, however tempting it may seem. The flower fields are on private land,” the tourism body said.

“Wading through the flowers may damage the flowers and bulbs or spread diseases to the flowers. Such actions cost flower growers lots of money every year.

“And surely you would not like people to walk into your back yard without asking every day.”

However, the board advises tourists are allowed to walk around the edge of the tulip fields and take photos from there.

There are also special cutting gardens where tourists are allowed to walk between the flowers and even pick them.
