Tourism ‘Bula as usual’ despite devastation from Cyclone Winston

Cyclone Winston’s path of destruction across the Fijian islands seems to have left the region of Bula mostly unaffected, to the delight of the tourism industry.

A fundraising breakfast for Fiji welcomed those who attended with the news that the best way to support Fiji in the aftermath of the category 5 cyclone is to support their tourism industry – meaning the more holidays to Fiji, the better.

In wake of the cyclone Fiji Airlines started the marketing campaign #strongerthanwinston which has now claimed more than 1 million followers on social media.

The airline has also negotiated with most of the island’s resorts to supply free wifi for guests so they can share pictures and reactions instantaneously rather than waiting until returning home to share the experience.

Fundraising and aid to Fiji has been strong, with Australia donating 15 million in support.

The fundraising event saw over $4,000 raised in raffle ticket sales and a further $3,000-$4,000 for each three prizes.

Tourists and locals can showcase the recovery of Fiji with #fijinow, highlighting to potential visitors that there is still reason to visit the island paradise.
