This film buff travels the world to match movie scenes to their filming location

This film lover’s Instagram account is giving us serious wanderlust today.

Thomas Duke has been travelling the world since 2017 conducting what he calls a “little photography endeavour” where he lines up photographs of scenes from movies with their filming locations. And the results are mesmerising.

“As a lover of film, it’s a joy to step through the real-life sets of my favourite stories, matching up the scenes as I go and exploring places I otherwise would have no idea exist,” the Englishman said on his Facebook page.

“I do this for the passion I have for film and that just about sums it up really. I can’t wait to explore some more!”

Duke posts his iconic images to his Instagram account @steppingthroughfilm.

“Always.” 💔 • It’s been 4 years since Alan Rickman passed away. I still can’t believe such a great man is no longer with us. His filmography is flooded with creative characters, classic stories, and iconic accents from all over the world, all of which have touched every single one of us to our core. From the dastardly rich and wanted in Die Hard, the lovesick lover in love Actually, and the misunderstood professor in Harry Potter. Severus Snape is undoubtedly the character he is most known for and it’s clear why. As Harry Potter said to his son, ‘he was the bravest man I have ever known.’ As they all did for Dumbledore, we hold up our magic wands in honour of his memory forever and always 🎬💙 • I took this photo when I was last at the @wbtourlondon. I wanted to capture something from this penultimate scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The revelation that Snape wasn’t all that bad… this took place in Dumbledore’s office after Snape is murdered by lord Voldemort; this is the set they used. Harry looks upon the memories of Snape and uncovers the truth. Always an amazing experience here at Warner Bros, thanks to the wonderful team for their help. • • #alanrickman #ripalanrickman #harrypotter #diehard #loveactually #robinhood #severussnape #life #love #hope #wbstudiotour #london #film #photography

“The truth is, I’m in love.” ♥️ • Swipe left to see them all grown up! Love Actually (2003) vs the Love Actually Red Nose Day reunion (2017). Continuing with the festive season, here’s another scene from the beloved rom-com where Liam Neeson and Thomas Brodie-Sangster are looking over the Thames talking about love. They’re seen sitting on a bench, which is no longer there, on the London Southbank – look at how young Thomas looks! Fast forward 14 years and here they are again – this time a few minutes away next to the Tate Modern – catching up on the good old days. Did you know? Sangster was only 5 years younger than Keira Knightley in the film… but she was getting married and he still looked about 10… let that sink in. • I love exploring this film! It’s such a pleasure being able to do so and with less than 2 weeks until Christmas it’s just too perfect 😊 it’s quite emotional seeing the difference 14 years does! • • #loveactually #london #christmas #festive #holidays #love #family #time #reunion #winter #classic #film #photography #explore #thomasbrodiesangster #liamneeson

“There has been an awakening…” • ad | Deep in the forests of Puzzlewood lies a filming location from a galaxy far far away… Star Wars: The Force Awakens! There are lots of key shooting spots here at @puzzlewoodfod with this spot being where Kylo Ren and Rey have their first showdown on planet Takodana. The Rise of Skywalker is out tomorrow – though of course you can catch the Star Wars triple bill and the midnight screenings TONIGHT at any @cineworld cinema. As always, it’s a great time to have an #CineworldUnlimited card! It’s the final chapter in this extraordinary saga so I’m sure every screen will be pretty packed! When are you seeing it? • I was guided by the lovely team at Puzzlewood who told me about what was filmed – I then went exploring solo to see what I could find! It was quite hard to distinguish the right rocks and foliage but wow it was just such an exciting location to step through and explore as previously seen in my Merlin photos. • • #starwars #theforceawakens #riseofskywalker #rey #reylo #kyloren #poedameron #lukeskywalker #daisyridley #markhamill #adamdriver #princessleia #carriefisher #harrisonford #film #photography

“It is not a choice. It is a duty.” • ad | I teamed-up with @netflixuk to explore the royal elegance & beauty of @thecrownnetflix 👑 Following in the footsteps of such golden splendour was quite an extravagant feeling – standing where Olivia Colman, Her Majesty, spoke her speeches as she firmly commanded a country. This series is woven through the history of Britain, filmed all over the authentic landscape and architecture of the United Kingdom, and done so with the utmost respect, honour, and justice to the crown. Every member of the cast embodies their true-to-life persona with talent and suave, it’s truly a delight to watch this series grow into the arms of the nation. Season 4 is already gearing up to be an intense insight into the next chapter of the Royal family. • London. Reading. Buckingham. Windsor. Wales – just some of the stunning locations used from around the UK for filming. This production is primarily set in London with the first two shots seen here taking place at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich (also home to many Hollywood blockbusters) with the others being shot all around the lush countryside of stately homes and glorious estates. I feel extra British while writing all of this, proud to be! It was a real joy to explore all of these locations and to step through this royally stunning historical slice of television. • • #thecrown #netflix #oliviacolman #clairefoy #charlesdance #mattsmith #helenabonhamcarter #queen #monarchy #royalfamily #uk #british #england #london #buckingham #locations #tv #photography #art

“I’m a ROCKET MAN!” 🚀⭐️ • What a year this has been for @taron.egerton! In celebration of his 30th Birthday tomorrow I decided to take a stroll down Oakmeade lane located in Pinner. Consider this post an appreciation of everything Taron, Rocketman, and Elton John! Such an inspirational film full of colour and hope. It was stunning to see Egerton embody this musical icon, his performance was simply wonderful and his singing chops even more so. The passion he put into the role oozes through the raw emotion he gives when talking about the project – it’s so lovely that he & Elton have become close friends through all of it. “He gave me the first ever diamond earring he bought in 1972. I just knew that this was the most important role I’ve played so far.” Egerton said. Hollywood giving the awe-inspiring life of Elton John what he rightfully deserves in all of its wonderful, colourful, and enigmatic glory. • Welcome to Pinner! The town in Greater London where @eltonjohn was born & raised. Little did he know that 71 years after his birth that a film about his life would be shot in the same town where he grew up – the circle of life. This road is where the exterior of Elton’s house resides in the film as well as the joyful opening number to the film. It was fantastic to visit this location and sing along to all of the classic tunes as I went along. • • #rocketman #eltonjohn #taronegerton #musical #inspiration #life #love #lgbt #acting #music #london #film #photography #filmlocation

“You’ve got red on you.” 🧟‍♂️ • We’re nearing Halloween which means it’s time for another visit to a zombie-stricken Shaun of the Dead location! Shaun heroically makes his way through the hoard of dead to save his one true love, Liz, in the flat right there in the centre. These buildings, this specific one named Cunningham House, are still used as flats to this day and are visibly the same as they were 15 years ago – a perfect place to visit if you want to step through your favourite Edgar Wright creation. Did you know? The production needed A LOT of zombies, especially during the final fight scene, but with limited funds that would have been a problem. The solution: ask fans of Edgar Wright’s previous work, ‘Spaced’ to come on down (according to Simon Pegg, for £1) to be a zombie for the day! Passion is stronger than a pay check. Well, sometimes. I wish I was old enough back then to be a part of it. • This year also marks the 15th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead; released in the UK on the 9th April 2004, released in the US on the 24th September 2004. All that work over a decade ago and this film is still so close to many… it’s just so inspiring and I love that! Thank you @edgarwright 🎬 • • #shaunofthedead #simonpegg #nickfrost #edgarwright #zombies #halloween #scares #classic #filmmaking #behindthescenes #hotfuzz #theworldsend #babydriver #london #film #photography
