Surf’s up at Melbourne Airport

Surf’s up at Melbourne Airport

Australia’s first surf park will open at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport in late 2017, with the new facility slated to become a key tourism destination.

Melbourne Airport will lease the land to private sport and leisure facilities company, Wave Park Group, which holds the exclusive rights to the wave generating technology in Australia.

URBNSURF Melbourne will feature a 320 metre lagoon that generates multiple waves every 90 seconds, with the guaranteed waves designed for people of all ages and abilities.

“We are very excited to be involved in Australia’s first surf park, which will provide a significant contribution to the Victorian and local economies through new jobs and visitors who will come from around the globe,” Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said.

“This surf park brings a beach-like experience to Tullamarine, providing a fun, open-air entertainment facility for the local community and beyond.”

In addition to the surf lagoon, URBNSURF Melbourne will include retail shops, a café and other water activities.

Surfing is the second most popular aquatic sport in Australia, following swimming. It is also second only to AFL in the number of participants involved in the sport in Victoria.*

During construction, which is expected to start in the second half of this year, around 300 jobs will be created. Once open, around 45 full time equivalent jobs will be available.
