St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana Airport reopens

Maho Bay, St Maarten, Netherlands Antilles - November 15, 2013: People at Maho Beach watch a KLM Boeing 747 come in for a landing at Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten.

The iconic St. Maarten’s Princess Juliana Airport located in the Caribbean nation of Sint Maarten will re-open its runways this week having been closed from the recent hurricanes.

Flights will take passengers from St. Maarten to Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Barts, and St. Kitts, with other service expected to be added in the coming weeks.

According to reports, Princess Juliana suffered damages of up to $100 million from Hurricane Irma.

The airport has garnered attention in recent years for its close proximity to the beach, as incoming planes swoop just a few metres above tourists.

The airport will officially open 6 October with local carrier Winair set to be the first airline to take off.
