Spain set for record year of tourism

Spain is set for a third consecutive record year for tourism, with nearly 64.6 million visitors registered in the first 11 months of the year.

Tourism Minister Jose Manuel Soria said December’s figures are expected to top 3 million, putting the full-year estimate at about 68 million tourists. That compares with the previous record of 64.9 million visitors in 2014.

The 11-month figure was up 4.8 per cent on the same period last year.

The sector, which represents about 11 percent of Spain’s economy, has improved in recent years due to a weak euro and security issues in competing Mediterranean beach resort nations like Tunisia and Egypt.

In 2013, Spain received a then-record 60.6 million tourists.
