Royal to lose 69,000 tonnes

Royal Caribbean Cruises will sell Splendour of the Seas to TUI Cruises in mid-2016, which will then be leased to UK-based Thompson Cruises.

The 69,100-ton vessel, which was built in 1996, will complete all scheduled deployments before the sale, which is said to be in line with RCI’s ongoing strategy.

“The ship’s sale is in line with our strategic objective of divesting ourselves of older hardware and keeps us firmly on the course to the Double-Double,” Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, chairman and chief executive officer Richard Fain said.

Splendour’s final sailing will commence April 4 2016 and all crew members will remain with the company and transferred to other vessels worldwide following the completion of the sale.

The ship was built by Chantier’s de L’Atlantique, now STX France, in St. Nazaire, France and carries 1,830 guests (double occupancy) and 760 crew.
