Research: Aussie travellers prioritising self-care and self-improvement trips

Learning a new language, going for a self-care retreat and cooking a new cuisine are among the top experiences on travellers’ bucket lists for 2019, according to new research from Agoda.

The research, conducted across seven countries, including Australia, found that travellers are prioritising self-improvement and self-care when they travel.

In Australia, bucket list experiences desired by travellers include learning a new language (number one for 18 – 29-year-olds), trying a new sport (a priority for 30 to 39-year-olds) having a digital detox (most popular for 40 to 49-year-olds).

Across all age groups, Australian women are three times more likely to pick self-care holidays (19 per cent versus 6 per cent) while Australian men are three times more likely to prefer sporting events as a travel experience (16 per cent versus 5 per cent).

Travel and learn a new language

Travellers, especially younger ones, are looking to learn a new language in 2019. Over a fifth (21 per cent) of young Australian travellers (aged 18 – 29) cited learning a new language as their number one travel bucket list experience.

Learning a new language is a great way to expand your horizons, get to know people and understand a new culture.

Cooking can be therapeutic and learning to cook local food can be a good way to experience the culture of a city. Across markets, including Australia, 13 per cent of respondents chose learning to prepare a new cuisine as the number one choice for their 2019 travels.

Sign up for a cooking class at the start of your trip and you’ll be able to better appreciate the local gastronomy during the rest of your stay.

In Japan, taking a self-care retreat was cited as their top travel bucket list experience, and was the top choice for almost 50 per cent of Japanese female respondents compared to only 19 per cent for Australian women.

Prioritizing wellness and self-care on a vacation can be rejuvenating for both the mind and the body. From meditation retreats, yoga courses to spa holidays, there is plenty for the global traveller to do to revitalize their soul.

Digital detox

While technology is a saviour in many ways, in today’s always-on world, vacations also provide the perfect opportunity to disconnect and take a much-needed break.

In Australia, almost one third (32 per cent) of 40-49 years ranked digital detox as their top bucket list experience for 2019.

Try a new sport

While sports and adventure didn’t feature in the top three bucket list experiences across other markets, in Australia it did amongst all age groups except those aged 50 and above.

Trying a new sport is also a popular ambition in the Philippines, China, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Individual sports like skiing and cycling are great activities travelers can enjoy on vacation.

Attend an international sporting event

There is nothing quite like the way a stadium full of screaming sports fans from around the world unite in support of their favorite player or team.

Take your sporting obsession to the next level by heading to watch the best-of-the-best compete for coveted international titles.
