Qantas to reward frequent flyers for being active

A new health insurance product from Qantas will reward members of the airline’s frequent flyer program with points for staying active.

Qantas Assure has been created in partnership with Nib and will launch in the first half of 2016, with Qantas targeting a 2 to 3% share of the $19 billion Australian private health insurance market on a revenue basis in its first five years.

“Qantas Loyalty has shown it knows how to attract, reward and retain members for their choice of airline, credit card or retailer,” group chief executive Alan Joyce said. “By partnering with nib, we believe there is a huge opportunity to do the same thing in the $19 billion private health insurance market and drive significant growth for the Loyalty business.”

Under the deal, nib will oversee health insurance, risk assessment and underwriting with Qantas Loyalty bringing marketing, data and customer retention expertise to the table with value to be shared equally between the two.

Wearable technology will enable customers to track their activity levels through a wellness app as they work towards a variety of targets. The app will generate Qantas Points dependent on the customer hitting their target, and the size of the target, and will then deposit them into the user’s frequent flyer account.

“This is not about simply earning points when you pay a bill,” Joyce continued. “It’s about offering members the opportunity to be rewarded for being more active, which is something that also has a direct impact on improving your wellness.”

Qantas Loyalty chief executive Lesley Grant said the new product would create a “very different” relationship between customers and health insurance.

“It’s deliberately different and we think it’s very exciting,” she said.

Meanwhile, nib managing director Mark Fitzgibbon described the partnership as “one of the most innovative” to be seen in Australia’s private health insurance market.

“Qantas Assure’s ability to meaningfully reward customers for leading a more active lifestyle not only strengthens the relationship Qantas has with its members, but has the potential to improve their health and wellbeing and with that lower health care costs,” he said.
