Oscars fly first class, given separate boarding pass to owner

Australia’s team of Oscar winners enjoyed first class treatment on their flight home and so too did their gold statuettes.

Just like the successful Mad Max: Fury Road crew, the glowing trophies were each given a separate boarding pass printed under the name MR OSCAR, before they were escorted by Qantas hosts through the security screening.

The flight was officially named QF12 but renamed Oscar One to acknowledge the extraordinary success of the Mad Max team who won six categories at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Monday.

A Qantas spokeswoman told AAP, fans initially thought the Oscars were the fake statues purchased in stores.

“There was much excitement going through security screening at LAX. At first people thought they were the fake ones you get at Hollywood shops until they realised they were the real deal,” she said.

“Oscar had to go through the standard security screening machines and had to lay down so he didn’t topple over when he went through the machine.”

Director George Miller and his Oscar-winning wife Margaret Sixel were on the flight alongside two other Oscar winners and a number of other crew members.

The golden trophies were taken as part of the winners’ hand luggage but were securely packed away for takeoff and landing.
