NSW and ACT residents travel more than other Aussies

PSA: If you live in NSW or the ACT, you’re some of the most worldly bunch in Aus.

The rest of you, not so much. Sorry – but it’s science.

That’s right folks, online travel booking platform Agoda has decided it would be fun to start a war in Australia – and has created a Travel and Tech study to rate which states are stay-at-home grandmas and which are globe-trotting wanderlusters.

And yes, we worldly bunch at Travel Weekly are from NSW.

Overall, NSW and ACT dwellers have taken the most trips, domestic or international, in the past year – with an average of almost five trips per state.

Victoria and Western Australia residents travel the least overall, with an average of just over three trips per state.

This is probably a good time to mention that your state does not define you. If you want to travel the world, don’t let the fact that you live in Victoria stop you!

But if you’re from WA, you probably need to work on your domestic travel more than your international, according to the survey.

Despite boasting the most landmass and the many delights of the Margaret River wine region, plus a ton of beautiful beaches and some of the best marine life in Australia, Western Australia only averaged 1.7 domestic trips, probably because it’s so. Far. Away.

Aussies from NSW and the ACT take first place in the unofficial Agoda Aussies-who-travel-overseas-the-most awards, with the highest number of international trips in the last year.

WA is hot on their tail however, with the difference between first and second place being only 0.2 trips – both NSW and ACT Aussies took 1.8 trips on average, and WA residents took 1.6 trips on average.

Queenslanders are the most likely to travel in their own backyard – averaging over three domestics trips in the last 12 months. But seriously, have you seen Queensland?

It’s no surprise – especially after Tourism Queensland’s award-winning ‘Best Job in the World’ campaign in 2009.

Andrew Edwards, Global Director for Brand and Communications at Agoda, said it was somewhat surprising to see Aussies travelling more domestically than internationally overall.

Aussies have a global reputation for being well travelled but it’s interesting to see they are travelling more at home than anywhere else.

“That’s reflected in agoda’s ambition here in Australia. We used to focus on the outbound traveler but increasingly we are offering more options – and more deals – for domestic travel,” he said.
