Midweek Interview with Club Med’s Tony Soden

This week, we spoke to the AU/NZ Club Med national sales and customer relations manager about what he likes to eat for breakfast. Well, and a few other things.

The challenge for the industry is…

Keeping up with the fast pace of technology. We can’t be complacent and expect that what tools we’ve used in the past, will get us to where we need to be in the future.

The things I like about my job…

I love the whole concept of Club Med and always have since my family holidays at Lindeman Island as a child.

Being a Sales manager for a product and brand I love is something I am very lucky to do.

I get to work with an amazing team, who all have a passion to see the brand succeed in our market. And of course, to get to visit some of the most amazing resorts (we call them villages in Club lingo) is not too bad either!

And the frustrations are…

I don’t like negative people. I can never understand people complaining about things completely out of everyone’s control and not enjoying being on holidays.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be…

A pilot.

Favourite airline?

You can’t go past a long haul flight to Dubai and Europe at the right end of the plane on Emirates!

In all honesty though, I think all the airlines provide exceptional service, and constantly updating their offerings.

I am very excited for Air Mauritius’ new fleet coming to Australia and added with the already fab service, it’ll be a game changer.

My proudest moment was…

Becoming a Dad. I have a three-year-old daughter named Harper, who lights up my world and I can’t wait to show her what Club Med has to offer!

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

I’ll keep it PG rated….Hopefully my Mum doesn’t read this: I used to put a small split in the wooden spoon when younger so when I was smacked it always broke, and she could never explain why.

After ruining three spoons she gave up! I always wondered when she was going to buy plastic ones…. Oh well, #winning

I try to relax by…

Going to the beach. I could spend all day, everyday there and am looking to move back to the Northern Beaches in Sydney, so I can at least spend my free weekends there.

The last time I feared for my life was…

Actually is, every morning commuting to work in the Sydney city on the bus.

People cut buses off in the bus lanes and bus drivers aren’t always the quickest to react, and everyone on the bus feels the slightest jerky movement!

If I can, I always try to avoid…

Negative people, catching the bus to work, and complainers.

I really wish I had…

Nothing.

I am very fortunate to be happy with my personal life and work life. Cliche I know, but it’s honestly true!

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

Be yourself. Have the guts to stand up for what you believe in or you’ll spend your life in other’s shadow and as a puppet.

I don’t understand why people…

Can’t appreciate what an amazing industry we work in and how lucky we are to get paid to go on holidays

My greatest weakness is…

Mexican food. I could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner!

And my greatest strength is…

The people around me. I am very fortunate to work with a great team and I love coming to work everyday surrounded by positive people

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would…

Buy a little beach shack on the Sunshine Coast, as $1 million these days isn’t going to get you much in Sydney!

If I was prime minister I would…

Enforce daylight saving for QLD!

If I could be someone else for one day I would be a…

Lifeguard. Best office view out there!

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

The Kimberley. I have travelled all over the world but never been to this part of Australia… One day I hope!

My favourite holiday was…

I enjoy any holiday, as there’s always something new to do.

I had an amazing trip to the Greek Islands last year, and definitely keen to go back and spend longer next time!
