Midweek Interview: Gaylord Lamy, General Manager, The Langham Sydney

We chat with Gaylord Lamy, General Manager, The Langham Sydney in this week’s Midweek Interview.

The challenge for the industry is…

To find the right candidate for the right role within a hotel. It has become more and more challenging over the years to recruit the right people who are dedicated to becoming qualified and are passionate about wanting to make a career in this industry.

The things I like about my job…

Not one day will be the same as another. The daily challenges that come with each day and finding new and interesting ways of solving them. I also get to travel and meet people all the time, this has allowed my family and I to be exposed to many new cultures.

And the frustrations are …

Not being able to overcome a negative first impression. On occasion (very rarely!) a guests expectations may not be met and you sometimes don’t have the opportunity to rectify that prior to departure.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be…

Running my own bar or restaurant. I think I would always be attached to travel in some respect…

Favourite airline?

The spirit of Australia, Qantas!

My proudest moment was…

I have two… Personally the birth of my daughter. In work, when was when I received my first General Manager role on October 10th 2016, here at The Langham Sydney.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

I snuck in to 2 movies in a row at a movie theatre.

I try to relax by…

Most recently, surfing and trying as many new restaurants as I can since I moved to Sydney. Otherwise, spending time with my wife, Ashley and daughter Delaïla as well as our dog, Hudson.

The last time I feared for my life was…

When I got in a car accident when I was 20 years old.

If I can, I always try to avoid…

Taking public transportation. I love driving.

I really wish I had…

More time to spend with family back in France and in the USA as well as travel the world and discover new countries.

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

Always go with your instinct.

I don’t understand why people…

Don’t try to familiarize themselves with as many new cultures as they can by traveling the world

My greatest weakness is…

Croissants and cheese, I can never resist.

And my greatest strength is…

My ability to adapt to new environments.

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would…

Secure my family’s future financially and keep working.

If I was prime minister I would…

Try to learn as much from the previous one’s mistakes and try to make things better.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be a…

A fighter pilot.

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

Brazil

 My favourite holiday was…

Christmas
