Man dies after falling from cruise ship balcony

A passenger onboard a Carnival cruise has died after falling from a balcony.

Carnival Horizon was reportedly returning to port in Miami when the man, who was identified by local police as Brian Rice, fell from a balcony onto a deck below.

According to USA Today, Rice died from blunt force trauma on Friday and was seen to by the ship’s medical staff before he died. Authorities have confirmed his death was not deemed a suicide.

The ship arrived at PortMiami on Saturday morning where detectives began a preliminary investigation.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed in a statement to Travel Weekly that a guest died as Carnival Horizon was returning to Miami on Friday evening.

“Our CareTeam continues to provide support to the guest’s family and we cooperated with the standard law enforcement investigation when the ship arrived to PortMiami on Saturday morning,” the cruise line said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest’s family.”

The ship, which is the line’s biggest vessel and holds 3,954 passengers, was returning from a six-day trip around the Caribbean.
