Malaysia Airlines flight makes emergency landing in Melbourne

A Malaysia Airlines A330 jet flying to Kuala Lumpur from Melbourne has been forced to turn back due to failure of its starboard engine shortly after take-off.

Flight MH148 returned to Melbourne Airport today with 300 passengers on board, and have since disembarked from the aircraft.

The airline said the Airbus 330 is being inspected by the carriers engineers and ground personnel, while preliminary inspection “reveals no physical evidence of fire externally, and further assessment is underway”.

According to the Guardian, an Airservices Australia spokesman said the plane had experienced engine failure.

“Something occurred when the engine went full-throttle, and as is standard in such situations the pilot has taken the plane out over the bay to dump fuel, and it will land shortly,” he said.

There has been no disruption to services at Melbourne’s international airport.

More information will be released when available, MAS stated.
