Japan Airlines serves single banana as business class vegan meal

When booking a business class ticket onboard any plane, it’s fair to say you are expecting premium services across all areas of the flight.

However, to the surprise of one guest onboard a Japan Airlines flight from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport, they received a banana as their vegan meal option.

Posting to the aviation forum ‘flyertalk’ user Kris_Chari wrote: “Before takeoff today my flight attendant confirmed that I ordered VGML and that my breakfast was a banana, by which I mistakenly assumed she meant that breakfast included a banana.

“When she served the banana after takeoff I thought it was just an underwhelming appetiser, but it was in fact the entire meal service!

“It was a really good banana—one of the best I’ve had recently—but it still seems more appropriate as a snack.

“Is catering out of  (Tokyo Narita Airport) typically this underwhelming?”

One commenter on flyertalk noted that Japan Airline’s does not serve breakfast on this specific flight during the early morning rotation, which Chari was on.

This may explain why her “breakfast” was so underwhelming, as there was never meant to be breakfast at all.

The passenger said she was later served “barely season spaghetti” for lunch.

Japan Airlines clarified the incident in a statement to Simple Flying.

“On flights departing from Jakarta, a snack/refreshment is served immediately after take-off in business class. Prior to arrival at Narita, a meal is served: (JL720-lunch) or (JL726-breakfast). The current snack/refreshment for all special meals on this route is a banana.

“We take customer satisfaction seriously and we will continue to respond to our menus in light of the growing interest and diverse needs of customers requesting special meals, including the valuable feedback from this customer.”
