International tiger day celebrates growth

Today is International Tiger Day, a time to celebrate that after a century of constant decline, the number of wild tigers is on the rise.

According to the most recent data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), at least 3,890 tigers now exist in the wild—up from an estimated 3,200 in 2010.

However, there is still a long way to go to ensure the safety and sustainable growth of these magnificent animals in the wild. A big part of this is ensuring travellers avoid the horror tiger tourist traps like those in Thailand, and participate in more socially responsible practices.

Soft adventure specialists Adventure World are calling for Australian travellers to participate in more sustainable wildlife practices, such as spotting tigers in their natural habitats.

Adventure World, general manager, Neil Rodgers said “at Adventure World, we have long been committed to animal welfare and are thrilled that the tiger population is experiencing the first positive trend in over a century.  While still a long way off from where the population should be, the current increase proves that we are making headway and their future is brighter than ever.”

Adventure World, in conjunction with the TreadRight Foundation, currently supports a number of wildlife initiatives designed to help protect threatened species. These include investment into the Wildlife Initiative, dedicated to stopping wildlife crime – and through the adoption of the TreadRight Animal Welfare Policy which ensures all experiences meet globally recognised animal welfare criteria.

So how can you enjoy an experience with tigers in a safe way for both yourself and the tigers? Adventure World suggests:

Central India Wildlife Safari

While Adventure World’s new six-day Central India Wildlife Safari can’t guarantee a tiger sighting, it will certainly set travellers up with the best possible chance. This experience features two of India’s most spectacular national parks: Kanha, one of India’s largest National Parks and prime tiger country as well as the expansive Pench forest.
