Hunter will be back

Time to crack open the wine, Hunter’s ultimatum seems to have worked.

Complaints to the New South Wales government has seemingly not fallen on deaf ears, with calls to look into how it funds regional tourism organisations set for review.

The move comes after Tourism Hunter entered into a ‘period of dormancy’ in June and issued an ultimatum it would close indefinitely if the NSW government were not going to support a more sustainable regional tourism model.

At the time, Tourism Hunter chairman, Will Creedon said there was a need to coordinate tourism campaigns to draw greater visitors to the region and that the NSW government needed to “usher in a new era to take regional tourism forward”.

“For too long, regions across New South Wales have been hampered by inconsistent capability funding,” Creedon said in June.

Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres yesterday announced the government would evaluate the current regional tourism model and funding structure, with RTOs already contacted for the review, which would get underway shortly.

The committee is expected to report back to the government by the end of September, with plans to implement recommendations by the end of the year.
