Heavy fog causes chaos at Sydney Airport

Heavy fog caused chaos at Australia’s busiest international flight hub over the weekend.

Saturday morning saw 10 domestic flight cancellations and delays of international flights at Sydney Airport, a spokesperson for the airport told Reuters.

Delays of up to an hour continued throughout the day despite the fog having lifted by noon and travellers were urged to check departure times with their airlines before arriving at the airport.

A spokesperson for Virgin Australia said the fog caused the airport to reduce the number of arrivals and departures for all airlines, causing delays in and out of Sydney throughout the day.

Qantas had a number of international services from Dallas, Los Angelas, San Francisco and Christchurch diverted to Brisbane to refuel as a result of the fog.

“We were able to minimise disruptions to customers by working closely with our colleagues at QantasLink and Jetstar,” a spokesperson for the airline told Travel Weekly.

Jetstar experienced one flight cancellation and delays of up to one hour and ten minutes.

“We appreciate delays are frustrating however safety is our first priority. Weather disruptions are beyond our control,” a Jetstar spokesperson told us.

Tigerair was also impacted, with nine flights affected in total.
